Research has proven the positive impact that taking part in drama and arts activities have on children as they mature. As well as the physical benefits, including strength, flexibility and fitness, there are many non-physical benefits that performing helps to develop in young children. Creativity and imagination are two faculties given the platform to flourish as they learn that they shouldn’t be afraid to express themselves. Children’s self-esteem, confidence and discipline also provide huge advantages in their development going forward, and they will certainly benefit from such activities later in life.
It’s this area of soft skill development that is imperative for young children, with projections suggesting that 85% of the jobs available in 2030 don’t actually exist yet. Soft skills, therefore, are nine times more likely to be endorsed than technical skills1, as these tradable and transferable assets are what, ultimately, children will be taking with them from this time in their lives to their future professions, regardless of what they are. Considering this, it in fact makes more sense to focus on transferable skill development for young children than it is to focus too heavily on the ‘set path’.
But it’s what the performing arts can do beyond employability and academics that truly defines the positive impact it has on communities. Taking part in performing arts activities offers engagement and a personal connection unlike any other discipline. Drama presents itself as the most realistic form of learning and development through external stimuli. It can often be through hard-hitting stories that are based on real-life events, or simply a theme explored that children are able to resonate with. Performance inspires children to think more deeply about topics raised and they even learn how they can help others or themselves in a similar scenario.

Being upfront about these scenarios and giving children the freedom to react to them as they see fit can help educate and address the impact on themselves and the world around them, rather than keeping them away from situations that will ultimately have an influence on their lives. Collaborating in a space where they can interpret information about the wider world gives children of all ages a better understanding of who they are and how they work with others to achieve a collective goal as a community.
